Weight Training

ScottWeightTrainFrame Weight training has numerous benefits, among which are building of metabolism-boosting, fat-burning muscle, and increases to strength, endurance and overall well-being. I workout at LA Fitness, usually at the Phoenix gym (Highland and 20th St) with my workout partners --Gary, Eagle and Don -- but I can sometimes be found at the Scottsdale location (Scottsdale Rd and McDowell) and occasionally at the Mesa location (Stapley and University) or Tucson East location (Wilmot and Broadway). I usually workout 3X week.

Walking/Running

Half Marathon I never enjoyed running on a treadmill or getting my cardio workout on any other machines in the gym. Too boring for me. But I also didn't enjoy going out jogging by myself. Then, whammo! I discovered Arizona Frontrunners - a great group of LGBT men and women who get together to walk, jog and run. In January 2010, I managed to complete a half marathon - probably the most significant athletic achievement in my life.

If you're interested in meeting a bunch of really cool people and enjoy getting out for walks, jogs or runs, you've got to check out Arizona Frontrunners!

Hiking

ScottHikeFrame Growing up, I was petrified of heights (or perhaps more precisely, of falling from a high place). Hiking has helped desensitize me to heights (although you still won't find me getting close to the edge of a cliff), helps with balance, leg and ankle strength and cardiovasular endurance, and is simultaneously strenuous and relaxing. You can see things on a hike that you cannot see any other way.

Always hike with a buddy or at least on a highly populated hiking trail. Make sure you carry plenty of water, some bandages and antiseptic, and something to snack on. Finally, it's usually easier to hike up than to hike down -- important to bear in mind when deciding how far to hike and when to turn back.

If you're a guy of masculine demeanor in reasonably decent shape, e-mail us and we'll see about us going on a hike.

Traveling

Scott on Fanning Island I enjoy exploring new cities on foot or using public transportation. I find it's the best way of seeing things and you don't have to worry about parking (which is a hassle in some cities). Like with hiking, when on foot, you see things you just can't see when in a car. I think you get a better sense of the place. Chicago

Music

Scott Cooking]

Working Out: System of a Down | Disturbed | Korn

Eating Out: Cake | Bread | Pearl Jam

Chilling Out: James Taylor | ELO | Toto

Venturing Out: Boston | Kansas | Chicago

Kicking Out: Lady Antebellum | Zack Brown Band

I enjoy both listening to music and writing/performing. The music that I enjoy listening depends on what I'm doing and my mood, and includes alternative (rock), hard rock, pop, hip-hop/soul, country-and-western, folk, latin, jazz, and new age.

The music I have written and enjoy performing is more limited, and includes pop, country-and-western, folk, instrumentals and musical theatre.

Food

Scott Cooking] I saved the best for last. Eating good food is one of my favorite things to do (another reason why hiking and weight training are so valuable to me). I enjoy most types of food (other than Cajun and Indian food, which have spices that disagree with me). Dinner with Friends
